چکیده

Abstract. A level-set based approach for the determination of a piecewise constant density function from data of its Radon transformat is presented. Simultaneously, a segmentation of the reconstructed density is obtained. The segmenting contour and the corresponding density are found as minimizers of a Mumford-Shah like functional over the set of admissible contours and — for a fixed contour — over the space of piecewise constant densities which may be discontinuous across the contour. Shape sensitivity analysis is used to find a descent direction for the cost functional which leads to an update formula for the contour in the level-set framework. The descent direction can be chosen with respect to different metrics. The use of an L-type and an H-type metric is proposed and the corresponding steepest descent flow equations are derived. A heuristic approach for the insertion of additional components of the density is presented. The method is tested for several data sets including synthetic as well as real-world data. It is shown that the method works especially well for large data noise (∼10% noise). The choice of the H-metric for the determination of the descent direction is found to have positive effect on the number of level-set steps necessary for finding the optimal contours and densities.

A Mumford-Shah level-set approach for the inversion and segmentation of SPECT/CT data

This paper presents a level-set based approach for the simultaneous reconstruction and segmentation of the activity as well as the density distribution from tomography data gathered by an integrated SPECT/CT scanner. Activity and density distributions are modelled as piecewise constant functions. The segmenting contours and the corresponding function values of both the activity and the density ...

Hierarchical Mumford-Shah Model for Vector-valued Image Segmentation, Denoising and Reconstruction

A novel hierarchical Mumford-Shah functional model is addressed to simultaneously segment, denoise and reconstruct the data within a given vector-valued image such as a color image, and to handle important image features such as triple points and other multiple junctions, which can be seen as a hierarchical case of the Mumford-Shah minimal partition problem for vector-valued images. At the same...

Curve Evolution, Boundary-Value Stochastic Processes, the Mumford-Shah Problem, and Missing Data Applications

We present an estimation-theoretic approach to curve evolution for the Mumford-Shah problem. By viewing an active contour as the set of discontinuities in the Mumford-Shah problem, we may use the corresponding functional to determine gradient descent evolution equations to deform the active contour. In each gradient descent step, we solve a corresponding optimal estimation problem, connecting t...

A Generalized Level Set Formulation of the Mumford-Shah Functional for Brain MR Image Segmentation

Brain MR image segmentation is an important research topic in medical image analysis area. In this paper, we propose an active contour model for brain MR image segmentation, based on a generalized level set formulation of the Mumford-Shah functional. The model embeds explicitly gradient information into the Mumford-Shah functional, and incorporates in a generic framework both regional and gradi...
